Texas A&M – Flowers & Plants Encourage Innovation, Ideas

Research Findings: Overall vs. women

The Texas A&M University research group explored the relationship between flowers and productivity in an eight-month study. Participants solved creative problems in a variety of common office environments. Participants worked in a space with plants and sculptures and an environment with no decorative embellishments.

Both men and women showed more innovation during the study. They generated more original solutions and ideas to problems in an office environment dominated by flowers and plants. Men who took part in the study had 15% more ideas. While males had more ideas than females, they were less creative and flexible in finding solutions to problems that involved flowers or plants.

Methodology

Texas A&M University recruited 101 participants for The Impact of Flowers and Plants On Workplace Productivity. Participants participated in dynamic, creative, and attentional demand protocols over eight months. The conditions were controlled but were very similar to workplaces. The subjects were required to complete a series of tasks under three conditions: without embellishments, with fresh flowers or plants, with abstract sculpture, or with no embellishments. Each session saw subjects complete four mood assessments, two creativity tasks, and one attention demand test. The data from the tests (Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking and Profile of Mood States) was used to measure the creativity and originality of participants’ ideas and other responses.

This research supports growing scientific evidence that flowers, plants, and other elements of nature positively impact emotions and states of mind. The Society of American Florists collaborated with the Texas A&M University researchers to bring their expertise in flowers and plants.

While males are more prolific in their ideas, females have more creativity and can find creative solutions to problems that involve flowers and plants.
